New regime vs old regime in FY 2026-27
The new regime is the default: lower rates, a ₹75,000 standard deduction for salaried taxpayers, and a rebate that makes taxable income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free — but almost no other deductions. The old regime keeps higher rates (nil to ₹2.5 lakh, 5% to ₹5 lakh, 20% to ₹10 lakh, 30% beyond) in exchange for the full menu of deductions: 80C, 80D, HRA, LTA, and home-loan interest.
Budget 2026 made no changes to slabs or rates, so the structure introduced for FY 2025-26 carries forward. Both regimes add a 4% health and education cess on the tax amount, and incomes above ₹50 lakh attract surcharge (not modelled in this calculator).
Frequently asked questions
What are the income tax slabs for FY 2026-27 under the new regime?
Nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% on ₹4–8 lakh, 10% on ₹8–12 lakh, 15% on ₹12–16 lakh, 20% on ₹16–20 lakh, 25% on ₹20–24 lakh, and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Budget 2026 kept these slabs unchanged from FY 2025-26.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?
Under the new regime, yes — the Section 87A rebate (up to ₹60,000) wipes out tax on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh. Salaried taxpayers also get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so salary income up to ₹12.75 lakh can be effectively tax-free.
Should I choose the new or old regime?
The new regime is the default and usually wins unless you claim large deductions. As a rule of thumb, the old regime only helps if your combined deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home-loan interest) are roughly ₹4 lakh or more at higher incomes. Use the comparison above with your real numbers.
What is marginal relief?
If your taxable income is just above ₹12 lakh under the new regime, marginal relief caps your tax at the amount by which income exceeds ₹12 lakh — so earning ₹12.1 lakh can't leave you worse off than earning ₹12 lakh.
